traditional icon painting
SP6109 Aug 28-30 (10:00am-4:00pm) Friday-Sunday
Icons use traditional motifs to express ideas and feelings. The egg tempera painting methods taught in this workshop by Finnish artist, Seija Floderus, were used by the early Christian Byzantine icon painters. Students will learn how to prepare the surface of the wood blocks; then they will prepare an icon drawing, which will be moved to the prepared surface. The group will also learn how to mix egg tempera pigments and paint images with this material. The instructor will show students how to inlay gold leaf and seal the finished surface. A materials fee will provide wood blocks, paint brushes, pallets, pigments and some gold leaf. Both beginners and experienced icon painters are welcome.
