Beginner-Intermediate

MAKE A HANGING LAMP

ME3709 June 6-7 (9:00am-4:30pm) Saturday/Sunday

In this intensive workshop you will make a stylish and fun ready-to-hang metal lamp for your home or office while learning the basics of sheet metal manipulation. We’ll discuss design possibilities and esthetic considerations, you’ll learn how to draft templates for a variety of shade shapes. While fabricating your lamps, you will be shown sheet metal cutting, filing, bending, and hole punching techniques and tricks. Demonstrations will be devoted to texturing, riveting, and finishes such as patinas and paint. Bring found items, beads, marbles, etc. to incorporate into your designs. Sheet metal, (galvanized steel ready to paint) light sockets, lamp findings, and chain will be provided. Those wishing to work in copper must make prior arrangements with Dale at least 2 weeks prior to class. All materials will be available for purchase from the instructor. The average project cost is $25-$30.

CHAIN MAIL JEWERLY: LEARN THE EUROPE 4-IN-1 & ROUND MAIL WEAVES

Chain Mail BraceletIn this second 1-day introductory level workshop, students will be taught the ancient technique of weaving unsoldered jump rings into a fluid flat and a supple round chain bracelet. Using a pair of smooth chain nose pliers, you will apply the correct technique for opening and closing a jump ring as you weave the patterns for the European 4-in-1 (a flat mesh) and the related Round Mail weave. Students will be provided with pre-formed sterling silver jump rings and clasps so that they can focus on the process of weaving and completing their two chain mail bracelets. Supplier sources and advice on how to make your own jump rings will be provided.

In just one day you will learn to make a beautiful pierced pendant. You do not need to have any prior metalsmithing experience to enjoy learning how to work with metal. Melissa will present ways to plan your piece, and will show you how to use basic metalsmithing tools. A focus on proper sawing techniques will be emphasized. If you do have some jewelry making experience this class is a great way to refine your skills. You will be provided with a list of supplies to bring to class.

Angular Metal Light SconceMake a great looking metal light sconce using techniques I have developed over the past decade. We will begin with safety issues, sheet metal types and characteristics, electrical considerations, types of rivets and other connection options. Day 1 you will make a night-light and become familiar with the basics of cutting, filing and hole punching. Later you will design and cut out your sconce. Day 2 will be devoted to making a ready-to-hang sconce. Also covered in class will be surface/texturing possibilities, such as hammering and stamping, and finishes such as patinas, paint, and powder-coating. We’ll employ cold connections only in this class; soldering will not be covered. Galvanized sheet metal will be used for our projects. If you want to use copper or some other metal please bring your own or contact Dale at least 2 weeks prior to the course at: jenssengallery@hotmail.com. All materials will be available for purchase from the instructor and will cost approx. $20-$25.

Organic Metal Bracelet with Set StonesThis very practical weekend workshop has been designed for those with insecurities or questions about soldering. The instructor will provide demonstrations and discussions on many aspects of soldering; and students will have an opportunity to practice the techniques presented. Some of the many topics covered will include: sweat soldering, pick soldering, findings, making bezels, cylinders, hollow constructions and production techniques. Most importantly students will receive a thorough understanding of the principles of soldering and how to apply them to their work.

This 8-week evening course open to anyone, will provide a thorough introduction to jewelry making from start to finish. Basic topics covered will include: tools and materials, sawing, soldering, piercing, fabrication, surface treatment, wire work, chasing, basic wax carving, and finishing techniques. There will be numerous demonstration and students will get a start on projects of their own design. Students with some metalsmithing experience can proceed at their own pace with individualized instruction.

Learn to make an intricate, elaborate bracelet out of two sterling silver forks in this fun, one-day class. Students will take two ordinary sterling silver dinner forks and turn them into an attractive bracelet that will last a lifetime, using various techniques including annealing, metal manipulation, and cutting. This class is open to students of all levels and all students will take home a finished project.

JUMP RING EARRINGS

Learn to make your own jump rings and discover the infinite possibilities. You will learn to use wire, a mandrel and pliers to form these perfect circles and then create a sampling of earrings by arranging the rings in different combinations. Some wire bending techniques will also be covered. This class will open the door to other opportunities using jump rings such as creating more intricate chains like the Byzantine.

Viola Galletta works with numerous beaded pieces Students who would like to design jewelry using wire will enjoy this practical hands-on two-day workshop. The group will learn how to create simple and elegantly styled necklaces with pendants, stones, earrings and bracelets. No experience is necessary. Students will use minimal tools for their projects. Materials including assorted wires in various gauges, beads and other components can be purchased from instructor, but students are encourage to bring whatever wire and supplies they have.

ENAMELING & FAURE TECHNIQUE INTENSIVE

Yellow and White Enameled Lid on Silver Jewelry Box Using lead free enamels we will explore methods of enameling on three dimensional and flat surfaces of metal. Also in this workshop students will work with the Camille Faure technique. This enameling done in France in the 1930’s sculpts the enamels into high and low areas creating a three dimensional effect. This method only recently was introduced to enamellists in the United States. Topics covered will include sifting versus wet packing, the use of foils, liquid enamels, enameling on copper, silver and gold, and firing procedures. No previous experience is required.

LOST WAX CASTING

ornate shapes cut out of earrings Cast jewelry opens up many exciting possibilities to the jewelry artist who wants to go beyond fabrication and into a more three dimensional and substantial method of jewelry creation. Students in this fun class will learn the art of lost wax casting, a process by which a model is carved in wax, invested in a plaster-like material, and then burnt out with high heat, leaving a cavity in which to pour molten metal. Students will gain experience with the entire process of lost wax casting, from carving wax models from their own designs, to the actual casting process using a vacuum casting machine, to finishing their castings into wearable pieces of jewelry. Some jewelry making experience is required.

Ornate bent wire cross on gold chain This 6-week course open to anyone, will cover the basic skills of jewelry-making. Focusing on the art of metal smithing, each student will be guided through the design and fabrication of a piece of jewelry of their own design, from concept to completion. Topics covered will include: various metals and their properties, basic tools and their usage, piercing and sawing, forming, decorative surface techniques and soldering with a gas fueled torch. The class will involve demonstrations, hands-on work and much one-on-one attention. Students with some experience can work at their own pace.

But the recently developed BRONZclay offers all the advantages of PMC at a fraction of the cost. It also opens up new aesthetic possibilities. In this introduction to BRONZclay, you’ll learn the basics of working with BRONZclay, from forming and stamping to firing and polishing. We will also cover some basic beading and jewelry techniques.

Students will explore the art of jewelry design and metalsmithing from start to finish. Topics covered will include: what to consider when designing a piece of jewelry, the various metals used in making jewelry, basic metalsmithing tools and their uses plus much more. The skills covered will include: bending with pliers, sawing, piercing, basic forming, decorative surface techniques as well as soldering with a gas fueled torch. No previous experience is required. The group will work with copper and silver.

CHAIN MAIL: spiral & helm chain

Attention chain mail jewelry enthusiasts! In this third one day workshop, students with some chain mail weaving experience will be taught the ancient technique of weaving unsoldered jump rings into the Double Spiral chain and the Helm Chain. As in our prior workshops, you will be using a pair of smooth chain nose pliers to correctly open, close and weave pre-formed and polished sterling silver jump rings into two different bracelets. Students will be provided with jump rings and clasps so that they can focus on the process of weaving and completing their chain mail bracelets. Advanced weaves that require the techniques learned in this workshop will be discussed. Students should bring their own smooth chain nose pliers to class, the materials fee will cover the cost of two bracelets.

MAKING METALSMITHING TOOLS

Learn to make a few of your own tools. You will understand: selecting metal for tools, annealing and quenching tool steel, grinding to shape, finishing, polishing, and tempering. Tools are very expensive, but armed with some concrete nails and some old dinged up hammers you can make chasing and stamping tools, shape hammers into formed and polished metalsmithing hammers, or a texturing tool. You can re-shape purchased hammers to better suit your needs. Tool steel available for purchase, and a supply list of suggested items to bring will be provided.

SOLDER-FREE HOLLOW BEADS

Learn how to create hollow multi-metal beads from silver, brass and copper without soldering. Make domes which are held together with tube rivets. The domes may also have soldered elements, but they are not necessary. A variety of textures will be explored as well to create visual interest on the beads. Some metalsmithing experience is required.

Metalsmithing Beyond the Basics

Four Metyal Spoons with Organic Handles You will need a good understanding of basic metalsmithing skills (sawing, filing, sanding, texturing, annealing and soldering). This class will focus on a number of specific projects designed to add to your skill level, leading you in new directions as well as addressing design. Each of the 5 days will introduce new techniques such as building an angular box: using texture, and containment, hinges, stone setting and forming. Your project will be designed to give a brief introduction and an awareness to the many forming approaches which will add to the aesthetic nuance of your piece. The 5th day will be a class choice: this could be completion of projects underway or a technique chosen by class participants. Discuss setting up your own studio.

EPOXY RESIN: CREATING WITH COLOR

Colorful Epoxy Resin Bracelet Set in SilverMake color a dynamic part of your jewelry using epoxy resin. Students in this intensive weekend workshop will learn how to combine epoxy resin with pigments and collage materials to create a myriad of spectacular effects and an unlimited color palate. This process is totally non-technical and requires no heat. The group will also investigate simple mold making materials for three-dimensional surfaces. Come and explore this unique and exciting process that you can use on your own kitchen table. All levels of experience are welcome.
